Deep Dive: Inquiry-Based Project Ignites Passion for Learning

As a director of innovative teaching and learning, I constantly search for new and exciting ways to engage young learners. I have seen firsthand how experiential learning using a project approach is a powerful way to do just that, allowing them to develop the skills they need to succeed beyond the classroom!

Recently, I had the pleasure of taking a team of seven preschool teachers to get trained on the project approach. Together, we planned the implementation of this year's first project at our school – and the results were incredible.

The project approach is all about diving deep into a topic, making discoveries and raising questions, and exploring it in a meaningful and relevant way for the students. Precisely what Ms. Maritza, Mrs. Tobin, Ms. Madison, Ms. Vero, Ms. Katherine, and Ms. Kianna did when they focused on Blocks and Paper. They encouraged their students to recognize and discover how everyone at school and at home might use blocks and paper. The children's shared stories and observational drawings led to new questions and wonderings.

The teachers recorded the students' questions about blocks and paper. They provided them with the necessary tools to investigate further in the form of books, multimedia, and bringing in experts in the field. A grandfather in the printing business shared his expertise with students, and he created and printed a class newspaper!

The students collected materials, made observational drawings, and shared their stories. Most importantly, they communicated their knowledge to an authentic audience. Through this project, the students developed a range of skills that will serve them well. They learned how to ask questions, find information, and communicate effectively with others. They also developed their creativity, critical thinking skills, and ability to work collaboratively with their peers.

And while the teachers always kept sight of the fact that they were engaging young children, they incorporated activities appropriate for their age and development level, recognizing the importance of play and social-emotional learning.

The opportunity to make learning relevant and transform education is here, and I urge all teachers to take advantage of it. Starting a project in your classroom and diving deep into a topic that interests you and your students is not only doable – it's also fun! The benefits for your students are well worth the deep dive. We must never forget that teaching is about more than just imparting knowledge – it is about nurturing the whole child and instilling a love for learning.

So don't be afraid to take a risk and try something new. You may find that it reignites your passion for teaching and learning as well!
